Hanging for Beach People show is this week...you'll all rec'v an invite to the open Two great paragraphs from this interview with Mark Katzman: http://www.commarts.com/insights/capturing-singular-vision. What are some challenges facing the industry? The challenges facing the industry today from a photographer’s perspective are based around client expectations. Many photographers will give away their work and rights for the opportunity to get work published or to land a client, or even just to get some new material produced for their portfolio. It is no wonder that clients expect us to turn on a dime when requesting estimates and treatments. Speed, price and flexibility are trumping craft and quality. And with the limited lifespan of most images produced, there may be less incentive to do quality work. In addition, many of the upcoming class of photographers and creatives have not built a strong foundation in art history, typography, design or, most importantly, the basic elements of photography. We face a big challenge to maintain quality as the economics of the short-lifespan image drive the industry’s output.

This summer's first project...Beach People 2015...soon to be a book and mailing.
It's funny...just one of those 'couples' things. We first started calling little birds like this 'bakery birds' when we came across them outside Boston cafes and patisseries. Cute, round, chirpy little guys picking up crumbs and hopping to and fro. Whether on a city sidewalk or an ocean-side wind-blown tree branch they're all bakery birds to me. This little guy greeted me this morning. Sadly I had no croissant crumbs to offer. Perhaps I should line my pockets?
Glad I wasn't trying to get anywhere on the water this morning! Thick fog until almost noon. Boat is on the mooring as of yesterday. Can't wait for the first cruise.
Been shooting in B&W a lot lately. Some folks advocate for cameras like the Leica Monochrom because by shooting directly in grayscale they don't have to convert from the native color [apparently it hurts their sensibilities.] Well, there's a fairly direct way around that in Lightroom. Have I lately mentioned how amazing the digital workflow is over the old chemical routine? I mean, don't get me wrong, I loved and embraced film and all it entailed. But. Boy do I get what my eye saw more often now!
Been buried in pixel-peeping after last week's surfing shoot. Decided to take a break and change perspective.
