Here's to new beginnings!
After years of hauling a full-frame DSLR around I've made the decision to put it up for a while and shoot exclusively with a pocket camera.
Admittedly though, this is not just any ol' point-n-shoot. It's a Leica D-Lux [Type 109].
As you may know, in addition to their iconic rangefinder uber-cameras Leica has been making pocket and compact cameras for some years now, some with fixed prime lenses and others with variable focal length fixed lenses.
The advantages to going with one of their pocket models are many. Many dollars, that is.
I shot years ago with a 35mm M3 and a single 50mm f2 lens and absolutely loved it...in fact, that very camera is still up in New Hampshire, and I truly hope to re-purchase it someday soon. When I do, this new D-Lux will document the whole trip.
So, what is the goal here? I think it's a mostly a move back to simplicity. One camera, one lens [although a zoom], probably manual focus, probably B&W only, and most importantly it will always be at hand.
In the past I have babied all of my gear to the point that when reselling it I could always claim 'like new, not a scratch, dent, or ding'.
That's likely not going to be the case here. This is a user. I hope to have it over the shoulder or on the car seat at all times...dings and dents be damned. We'll see if it's up to the wear and tear. Depending on how things go I may finally move over to an M9 and a few lenses and be done with the huge DSLRs for good.
Until then, of course, if a job comes up that demands it I'll pull the big guns out of storage. And if I feel too limited with the 109, the same. Don't think that's what's going to happen though.
