Heading up to New Hampshire tomorrow. It will be a quick trip, but look forward to seeing the familiar side roads and horizons.
Last year winter was just this benign as I recall.
It was our first year in Newport and we were looking forward to vacation off the coast of Mexico coming up. A bit this different this year...not weather-wise, which has been great so far, but in that we do have a little one scheduled to arrive next week. That's going to be a change. :) Below is a short gallery of images from this morning. Here's to new beginnings! After years of hauling a full-frame DSLR around I've made the decision to put it up for a while and shoot exclusively with a pocket camera. Admittedly though, this is not just any ol' point-n-shoot. It's a Leica D-Lux [Type 109]. As you may know, in addition to their iconic rangefinder uber-cameras Leica has been making pocket and compact cameras for some years now, some with fixed prime lenses and others with variable focal length fixed lenses. The advantages to going with one of their pocket models are many. Many dollars, that is. I shot years ago with a 35mm M3 and a single 50mm f2 lens and absolutely loved it...in fact, that very camera is still up in New Hampshire, and I truly hope to re-purchase it someday soon. When I do, this new D-Lux will document the whole trip. So, what is the goal here? I think it's a mostly a move back to simplicity. One camera, one lens [although a zoom], probably manual focus, probably B&W only, and most importantly it will always be at hand. In the past I have babied all of my gear to the point that when reselling it I could always claim 'like new, not a scratch, dent, or ding'. That's likely not going to be the case here. This is a user. I hope to have it over the shoulder or on the car seat at all times...dings and dents be damned. We'll see if it's up to the wear and tear. Depending on how things go I may finally move over to an M9 and a few lenses and be done with the huge DSLRs for good. Until then, of course, if a job comes up that demands it I'll pull the big guns out of storage. And if I feel too limited with the 109, the same. Don't think that's what's going to happen though. I'll let you know. Looking forward to an interesting 2016! [Edit: Interesting to see my post from exactly two years ago, where I say "Still looking for the digital replacement for my beloved M3." Ha! Looks like I've found it! http://chrisstump.com/1/archives/01-2014/1.html]
Morning light on First Beach, Newport Had a wonderful discussion with David of http://www.starsandlighthouses.com/ today. He's doing great work, and has applied for a major grant in order to continue the project. Technically and aesthetically his work is amazing, and as a former sailor I have a real appreciation for what he's doing. Godspeed David!
I'll be speaking at the Newport Photo Guild meeting on Nov 18th. Mark your calendars. Subject of the presentation will be recent work, along with the usual thoughts and musings. Been at this over 40yrs now, so I do have some of those to share. ;) Recent submissions have been to the annual photo show put on by the same group at the Newport Art Gallery, and a three image series to the 2nd Annual Open Call exhibition at Peter Miller Fine Art in Providence, RI. Oh, and happy to report I've been accepted as a 'Local Pro' by Surfline.com. You've seen most of the work I submitted to them on this page, so I won't repeat those images now. But, tomorrow is forecast to have great surf, so there may some great new stuff to share later in the week. Sunrise after the rain
Been looking at gallery and show opportunities for the season, and with this in mind came across this exchange between a pro and his viewer: "Viewer: Beautiful images...I love looking at wonderful landscape photography, I am rubbish at taking it, but I wanted to congratulate you and thank you for sharing. Pro: Everyone has a given amount of bad photos inside their heads. Taking photos runs the well of bad photos dry. It took me around 40,000 photos to clear out my garbage." Wow. Just wow. Could not have said it better.

"Sometimes I feel like the world is a place I bought a ticket to. It’s a big show for me as if it wouldn’t happen if I wasn’t there with a camera."
